The business climate has never been more
friendly toward entrepreneurship than it is today. However, enterprise and creativity
alone are rarely sufficient to bring an entrepreneur's ideas to fruition. Many business
thinkers have speculated that the skill set of an entrepreneur and the skill set needed to
bring a product or service successfully to market are mutually exclusive. To be successful, a new enterprise must
put together a management team, craft a business plan, negotiate with investors, establish
a company, and market and sell its product or service.
I work with startups at all levels of development to help them get their business on
track. I provide a variety of services including writing business plans, evaluating
business plans, providing interim management and executive services, being on advisory
boards or boards of directors, and supporting finding funding. I am not an investor
myself, and locating investment is not a primary service I provide, although I do do that.
I work on an hourly, project, or contract basis as appropriate, and will consider deferred
compensation on a limited basis. I generally expect a small equity position as part of my
compensation.
I was formerly a partner in Alliance Venture Partners and an associate of Co-Investors
Group. My experience with these and other VC firms has afforded me broad experience and a
firm grasp on what it takes to bring a company all the way from the "gleam in the
entrepreneur's eye" stage to mezzanine financing and beyond. I am available to
consult with and to advise companies on all stages of the process and to write, edit, or
advise on business plans and offering memoranda. My participation can range from
consulting and advice to bringing a company to my own or other VC firms for funding.
